Chi ha vinto il Festival di Venezia 2023?

Who won the 2023 Venice Film Festival?

Grammar

Riuscire + CI = to succeed in doing something

“Chissà se ci riusciranno anche Lanthimos e Garrone”
(Who knows if Lanthimos and Garrone will achieve this as well)

The Italian verb “riuscire” means “to succeed” or “to manage to do something” and it is often used with the particle “ci” to indicate success or the ability to achieve something.
The use of “ci” is similar to the use of the English word “it” in sentences like “Can you do it?” or “I can’t do it.”
For example:

  • Non ci riesco! (I can’t do it!)
  • Ci riuscirò (I will be able to do it)
  • Come ci sei riuscita? (How did you do it?)
  • Ci riuscirà? (Will he/she succeed?)

Translation

The 80th Venice Film Festival, the world’s oldest film festival, has concluded. The Golden Lion, the most important award, went to the film Poor Things! by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Good news for Italy as well, with Matteo Garrone winning the Silver Lion for Best Director for Io Capitano, a film that narrates the adventurous journey of two Senegalese guys 🇸🇳 towards Europe.

The Volpi Cup for Best Acting was awarded to Cailee Spaeny, who portrayed Priscilla Presley in the film Priscilla, and to Peter Sarsgaard for his performance in Memory.

In recent years, the Venice Film Festival has become a “slide to the Oscars” because often films presented at Venice end up winning the Oscars: it happened with A Star is Born, La La Land, The Shape of Water, Birdman, and Spotlight. Who knows if Lanthimos and Garrone will achieve this as well.
