Grammar

Passivo con “venire”
Passive form using “venire”

“la loro macchina viene ritrovata nel centro di Foggia”
(their car was found in the center of Foggia)

In Italian, the verb “venire” can be used instead of “essere” to form the passive voice, as in this case.
The passive form is constructed by conjugating the verb “venire” in the appropriate tense and person, followed by the past participle of the main verb.

Note that “venire” cannot replace “essere” to form the passive voice in composite tenses, such as perfect or past perfect forms.
Here are a few more examples:

  • Il libro viene letto da Maria. (The book is being read by Maria.)
  • Le case venivano costruite in pietra. (The houses were built in stone.)
  • La pizza verrà mangiata stasera. (The pizza will be eaten tonight.)

Translation

Pasquale and Rosalba are a young couple of newlyweds. Sunday morning, the day after their wedding, they discovered that their car had been stolen. Unfortunately, inside the car were also their wedding clothes.

The two, desperate, asked for help on social media to get back at least their clothes, which held great sentimental value for them.

A couple of days later, their car, a Fiat Punto, was found in the center of Foggia. Inside it, along with their clothes, there was a note: “Thief, yes, but with a heart.” A true gentleman thief.
