Grammar

Si dice che + congiuntivo
Si dice che + subjunctive

“Si dice che i gatti siano stati portati qui circa un secolo fa”
(It’s said that the cats were brought here about a century ago)

In Italian, the subjunctive mood is often used in conjunction with impersonal constructions, such as “si dice che” (it is said that), “è possibile che” (it’s possible that), or “è importante che” (it’s important that).

These constructions introduce statements that express uncertainty, doubt, desire, or opinions rather than objective facts.

Let’s see some more examples, including some other ipers:

  • Si dice che venga domani. (It is said that he/she is coming tomorrow.)
  • Può darsi che il tempo migliori domani. (It’s possible that the weather will improve tomorrow.)
  • È possibile che piova oggi. (It’s possible that it will rain today.)
  • Si dice che la nuova pizzeria sia molto buona. (It is said that the new pizzeria is very good.)

Translation

Su Pallosu is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. Besides the stunning landscape, however, it has another unique feature: it’s the beach of cats.

On this stretch of beach, in fact, lives a colony of cats, beloved and protected by the locals.

It’s said that the cats were brought here about a century ago by some fishermen to combat mice.

And the cats felt so good here that they decided to stay forever. And who can blame them?

The “Feline Oasis Su Pallosu” is indeed located within a nature reserve. Today, the colony has about 60 animals that enjoy the beach and the rocks. They all have names and microchips because a group of volunteers takes care of them.

Of course, the oasis is visited by cat lovers from all over the world, thanks to guided tours organized by the volunteers.
