Verbo ausiliare “essere” o “avere”?
Auxiliary verb “essere” or “avere”?
“il consumo di carne di cane è diminuito”
(the consumption of dog meat has decreased)
Like many other verbs in Italian, diminuire (to decrease) can be used both in transitive and intransitive way. Hence it can take both the auxilisiary verb essere and avere, depending on the type of action:
Essere > intransitive
Use “essere” when the verb “diminuire” is intransitive (does not have a direct object) and describes a change in state or condition:
– “La temperatura è diminuita” (The temperature has decreased)
Avere > transitive
Use “avere” when the verb is transitive (has a direct object) and refers to a specific thing being decreased:
– “Ho diminuito la velocità” (I decreased the speed)
