La Divina Commedia di Dante diventa social

Dante’s Divine Comedy goes social

Grammar

Fare + Infinito
Fare + infinitive: causative construction

“…ha l’obiettivo di far avvicinare i più giovani all’opera di Dante”
(aimed at bringing younger audiences closer to Dante’s work)

In Italian, this construction is called “causative construction” to express the idea of getting something done or having someone do something (instead of doing it yourself).
This construction is composed by two phrases without connectives:

1. first phrase with the verb FARE (or LASCIARE) in the FINITE mood
2. second phrase with the INFINITIVE (of the acting verb)

– “FACCIO RIPARARE la macchina” (I’m having the car fixed)

– “Mi FACCIO TAGLIARE i capelli (I’m getting my hair cut)

Note that when a causative sentence has TWO OBJECTS, the person being made to do something becomes the INDIRECT object, introduced by “a”:

– Il papà fa leggere il figlio (The dad makes his son read)
→ Il papà fa leggere un libro AL figlio (The dad makes his son read a book)

Similarly, to allow someone to do something is expressed by “lasciar fare” (or lasciare + any verb):

– Non mi LASCIA DORMIRE(She doesn’t LET ME SLEEP)

– HO LASCIATO FARE quel lavoro a mio figlio (I LET my son DO that job)

Translation

700 years after his death, the poet Dante enters the digital world with the project “La Divina Commedia for social media”.

Starting from March 20th, the Divine Comedy, the most important work of Italian literature, will be transformed into reels, live streams, stories, videos, and posts on the main social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.

It is a beautiful but certainly complicated initiative, aimed at bringing younger audiences closer to Dante’s work.

“The idea,” explains Emilio Fabio Torsello, founder of the project, “comes from the awareness that we are reading less and holding smartphones more often. With this initiative, we want to bring the Commedia where no one expects to find it.”
