Grammar

Alcuni Vs Qualche

The word “alcuni/e” is an indefinite pronoun that means “some” in English. It is used to indicate an unspecified or undetermined number of people or things, and it is always plural.

On the other hand, “qualche” also means “some” and is used to indicate a small, indefinite number of people or things. However, it is always singular, and it implies a more limited quantity compared to “alcuni.”

So, while both words indicate an indefinite quantity, “alcuni” refers to a plural, unspecified number, while “qualche” refers to a singular, limited number.
Here are some examples:

  • “Ho visto alcuni uccelli nel cielo.” (I saw some birds in the sky.)
  • “Alcune persone non amano il caffè amaro.” (Some people don’t like bitter coffee.)
  • “Hanno mangiato alcuni biscotti“ (They ate some cookies.)
  • “Ho comprato qualche libro di cucina.” (I bought a few cookbooks.)
  • “Hanno portato qualche vasetto di fiori.” (They brought a few flower pots.)
  • “Hai qualche domanda?” (Do you have any questions?)
  • “Ho alcune domande” (I’ve got some questions)

Translation

During an exhibition in Miami, a lady accidentally broke a sculpture by Jeff Koons worth $42,000.

The sculpture was part of the famous “balloon dog” series and looked like a blue balloon shaped like a dog.

Some witnesses reported that the lady touched the artwork, probably to verify if it was an inflatable balloon.

The sculpture fell and broke into a thousand pieces. The lady had no intention of damaging the artwork, and the insurance will cover the costs of repair.
