Trapassato prossimo
Past perfect

“aveva fame, poiché aveva saltato la colazione”
(he was hungry because he had skipped breakfast)

In this sentence, the second verb “aveva saltato” is in the trapassato prossimo because it indicates an action that happened before the moment of speaking in the past.

The use of the trapassato prossimo allows the speaker to indicate a sequence of events that happened in the past, highlighting which one happened first. In this case, the student being hungry is the consequence of skipping breakfast, which happened before.
