Firenze: la “ferita” su Palazzo Strozzi

Florence: the "wound" on Palazzo Strozzi

Grammar

Forma passiva
Passive form

“è stata inaugurata una nuova istallazione artistica”
(a new art installation was inaugurated)

In Italian, the passive form of a verb is formed with the auxiliary verb essere (to be) followed by the past participle of the main verb. It is used to describe an action performed on the subject rather than by the subject.

For example:

  • La torta è stata mangiata. (The cake was eaten.)
  • La casa sarà venduta. (The house will be sold.)
  • La strada è stata bloccata dalla neve. (The road was blocked by the snow.)
  • Il libro sarà scritto in italiano. (The book will be written in Italian.)

In the article above, “è stata inaugurata” is the passive form of the verb inaugurare (to inaugurate), meaning that the installation was inaugurated. “Sarà esposta” is also in the passive form of the verb esporre (to exhibit), meaning that the artwork will be exhibited.

Passive form is often used in Italian to shift the focus from the person or thing performing the action to the action itself, and it is commonly used in news articles, official documents, and formal writing.

Translation

On Friday, March 19th, a new art installation was inaugurated in Florence: a gigantic black and white collage that covers part of the facade of Palazzo Strozzi, one of the most famous Italian Renaissance palaces.

The artwork is called “La Ferita” and was created by French artist JR. It is an imaginary “tear” on the facade, 28 meters high and 33 meters wide: an optical illusion that reveals the interior of the palace, with real and imaginary elements, such as Botticelli’s paintings (which are actually located in the Uffizi).

“La Ferita”, according to JR, aims to make “visible the deep impact of Covid-19 on culture”. It represents the great suffering of the world of culture during the pandemic, due to the closure of museums, galleries, cinemas and theaters.

The artwork will be exhibited until August 22, 2021.
