Una nuova legge per la “doggy bag” in Italia

A new law for the 'doggy bag' in Italy

In Italia, l’abitudine di chiedere la “doggy bag” al ristorante, cioè una borsa per portare a casa gli avanzi, non è molto diffusa.

Secondo le ricerche, il 17% dei clienti la chiede “raramente”, mentre il 12% si vergogna.

Per combattere lo spreco di cibo, il governo vorrebbe quindi fare una legge per rendere la “doggy bag” obbligatoria in tutti i ristoranti.

circa la metà degli italiani si sono dichiarati favorevoli a questa iniziativa.

Grammar

Pronome diretto LA
Direct object pronoun LA

“la chiede raramente”
(request it rarely)

In this sentence, the word la is a direct object pronoun, and is taking the place of the feminine noun “la doggy bag”.
Instead of repeating the noun, we use “la” to avoid repetition and make the sentence more fluent.
Normally it comes before the verb:

– Prendo la rivista e LA (= rivista) leggo (I get the magazine and read IT)
– LA vuoi o non LA vuoi? (Do you want IT or not?)

BUT: if there are two verbs, or the verb is in the gerund, imperative or infinitive form, the pronoun follows the verb:

– “Vai a prenderLA (= lei)!” (Go get HER!)
– “Vuoi la mela? PrendiLA (= mela)!” (Do you want the apple? Take IT!)

Translation

In Italy, the habit of asking for a “doggy bag” at the restaurant, which is a bag for taking home meal leftovers, is not very widespread.

According to research, 17% of customers request it “rarely,” while 12% feel embarrassed.

To combat food waste, the government would like to pass a law to make the “doggy bag” mandatory in all restaurants.

About half of Italians have expressed support for this initiative.
