Translation

In the last few weeks, you may have come across a trend that started from the streets of Venice and is taking over social media (particularly TikTok): “Attenzione borseggiatrici, attention pickpockets!” (“Attention pickpockets”).

The unmistakable voice belongs to Monica Poli, a 57-year-old Venetian worker, who has become first the nightmare of pickpockets in Venice, and then an internet celebrity.

When she sees pickpockets at work, Mrs. Poli records them with her cellphone while shouting to attract the attention of people around, especially naive tourists.

Her “deeds” have garnered a lot of support but also some criticism.

In the meantime, Poli has become so well-known that she was interviewed by the New York Times and the Washington Post, and her shouts have been dubbed over various types of videos: from cats stealing food to Los Angeles Clippers players stealing the ball from opponents.

Had you already come across this catchphrase?
