L’albero di Natale più grande del mondo

The largest Christmas tree in the world

Grammar

Pronome diretto LO
Direct object pronoun LO

“per farlo”
(to do this)

In this sentence, “lo” is a direct pronoun that replaces and refers back to a masculine singular noun, in this case l’albero (the tree). It avoids another repetition of the noun.
Here are a few more examples:

  • Ho comprato un libro interessante. Lo leggerò questo weekend. (I bought an interesting book. I will read it this weekend.) – In this example, “lo” replaces the noun “il libro” (book).
  • Hai visto il film che ti ho consigliato? Lo adorerai! (Did you watch the movie I recommended? You will love it!) – Here, “lo” replaces noun “il film” (movie).

Translation

On December 7th, the world’s largest Christmas tree was lit. Which, actually, is not exactly a “tree.”

In fact, it’s not a traditional tree with lights and colored balls, but an entire mountain covered with lights.

It’s located in Gubbio, in Umbria, and is a tradition that started in 1981. Every year, a group of volunteers arranges lights on the mountain to create the shape of a massive Christmas tree.

But how massive is it? More or less like 30 soccer fields. And to do this, they used 1000 lights and 8 km of electrical cables.

The tree will remain lit every evening during the Christmas season and will be turned off on January 8th.

What do you think? Would you like to take a trip to Gubbio to visit it?
