Pronome diretto LO
Direct object pronoun LO

“Il bambino sentiva che lo stavano cercando”
(
The child could hear that they were looking for him)

The direct pronoun “lo” in Italian is the third-person singular masculine direct object pronoun. It is used to replace a singular masculine direct object in a sentence, typically referring to a specific thing or concept.

In this sentence, the direct pronoun “lo” refers to the child and is used to avoid repeating the noun. Let’s see some examples:

  • Ho comprato un libro e lo sto leggendo. (I bought a book and I’m reading it.)
  • Oggi ho visto un film molto bello, lo consiglio a tutti. (Today I saw a very nice movie, I recommend it to everyone.)
  • Ho trovato un nuovo ristorante etnico, lo voglio provare stasera. (I found a new ethnic restaurant, I want to try it tonight.)

Translation

Everyone has played it: we’re talking about hide and seek, one of the most beloved games by children (and not only) all over the world.

However, what happened a few days ago in Marsala, Sicily, is truly incredible. During a game of hide and seek with his friends, a 4-year-old child… disappeared!

First his friends, then his parents, then the whole neighborhood, and finally even the police: everyone tried to find him, but they couldn’t.

The child could hear that they were looking for him, but he didn’t come out because he absolutely wanted to win the game.

In the end, after two hours of searching, the police found him hidden at the neighbors’ house: he was smiling and calm, perhaps just a little annoyed because they had found him!”
