Venezia: due delfini nuotano davanti a Piazza San Marco

Pair of dolphins swimming near Venice's St Mark's Square

Grammar

Passivo con “dovere” = “due to”

“Ciò probabilmente è dovuto al fatto che… il traffico è molto diminuito”
(This is probably due to the fact that… traffic has decreased)

In the sentence above, the verb “dovere” is not used directly, but it is an integral part of the passive construction “è dovuto”.

The verb “dovere” is often used in the construction “essere dovuto a” to indicate that something is caused by or due to something else. In this construction, “a” is used to introduce the cause or reason for the action.

So, “è dovuto” can be translated as “is due to” or “is caused by”.
In the sentence above, the diminished traffic is the cause of the dolphins swimming in the canal.

Here are other examples of the passive construction with “essere dovuto”:

  • L’incidente è stato dovuto alla pioggia. (The accident was due to the rain.)
  • La cancellazione della festa è dovuta alle restrizioni Covid. (The cancellation of the party is due to the Covid restrictions.)
  • Il ritardo del volo è dovuto a un guasto tecnico. (The flight delay was due to a technical problem.)

Translation

After the jellyfish spotted during the first lockdown in 2020, now it’s the turn of dolphins. Two dolphins, in pairs, swam up to the entrance of the Grand Canal in Venice, right in front of the iconic St. Mark’s Square.

Sightings of dolphins in the Venetian lagoon are not extremely rare, but what makes this event unusual is the fact that they have come to an area that is usually very busy with ferries, boats, and gondolas, opposite the symbolic square of the lagoon city.

This is probably due to the fact that during this period, due to the restrictions for the coronavirus pandemic, traffic has decreased significantly, leaving more space for marine animals.
