Taylor Swift named Time Magazine's person of the year

( in 2016, the choice was the President of the United States)

In this sentence, the verb era stato scelto is in the trapassato prossimo because it indicates an action that happened before another moment in the past (in this case, the choice of Zelensky). Let’s see some examples:

  • Ho incontrato Luca dopo che aveva finito di lavorare (I met Luca after he had finished working)
  • La casa era pulita perché avevamo già fatto le pulizie (The house was clean because we had already cleaned it)
  • Sono arrivato tardi alla lezione perché avevo perso il treno (I arrived late to the lesson because I had missed the train)

Translation

The American magazine Time has elected the queen of the world pop, Taylor Swift, as the Person of the Year.

Swift is 33 years old, and in the past year, she has dominated the box office with her “Eras Tour,” the first tour in history to gross over 1 billion dollars.

The “full houses” in stadiums worldwide sometimes even caused earthquakes nearby, the so-called “Swift-quakes.”

“Swift’s achievements as an artist, culturally, critically, and commercially, are so massive that recounting them almost seems out of place,” wrote Time, “but this year, something has changed. She has become the main character of the world.”

The Person of the Year award is given annually by Time magazine to a person, a group, or even an idea that has “for better or for worse, influenced events the most in that year.”

Last year, for example, it was awarded to Ukrainian President Zelensky, while in 2016, the choice was the President of the United States, Donald Trump.
