The king of Neapolitan pizza introduces pineapple pizza

Prenderla bene/male = to take it well/badly

“…non l’hanno presa bene”
(…they did not take it well)

In Italian, the expression “prenderla bene/male” is used to convey someone’s reaction or response to a situation. It is idiomatic and can be translated as “to take it well/badly.”
Here are a few examples:

  • Dopo la sconfitta, l’atleta non l’ha presa molto bene e si è arrabbiato (After the defeat, the athlete didn’t take it well and got angry)
  • Mia sorella ha perso il lavoro, ma l’ha presa molto bene e ha iniziato a cercare nuove opportunità (My sister lost her job, but she took it well and started looking for new opportunities)

Translation

For Italians, pizza with pineapple is like kryptonite for Superman or Joker for Batman. In short, you got it: public enemy number 1.

However, Gino Sorbillo, one of the symbols of Neapolitan pizza worldwide, has decided to add the infamous pineapple pizza to the menu of his restaurant.

In a video posted on his Instagram profile and shot in his historic pizzeria in the center of Naples, Sorbillo showcases his new pizza and tastes it.

The verdict? “It’s delicious!” But anticipating a rain of criticism, he adds, “Guys, don’t roast me! There are too many prejudices about this pizza!”

Italian cuisine fundamentalists, however, did not take it well. The video received thousands of negative comments, some ironic, others less so.

Here’s one of the more polite ones: “I love pizza, and I love pineapple, but let’s not mix the sacred with the profane!”

And what do you think? Pineapple on pizza, yes or no?
