The simple prepositions tra and fra have the same meaning and can be used interchangeably in Italian. They can indicate:

1. Time between present and a future moment → “in”
– Partirò tra due settimane (I will leave in two weeks)

2. Position of something → “between”
– Roma si trova tra Napoli e Firenze (Rome is between Naples and Florence)

3. Alternative among more options → “among / between”
– Tra tutti i miei amici, è il più importante (Among all my friends, he’s the most important)
– Che preferisci tra pizza e pasta? (What do you prefer between pizza nad pasta?)

4. Relationship between people → “between”
– Tra me e mio fratello c’è grande affetto (There is a great affection between me and my brother)
