Relative pronouns substitute a noun and create a relation between two sentences.
The Italian relative pronouns “che”, “cui”, “il quale, la quale, i quali, le quali” correspond to the English ‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’, ‘whom’, ‘whose’.

CHE is the most used relative pronoun, but it cannot be used after a preposition. In these cases, we use CUI instead of CHE.
The preposition goes in front of the relative pronoun:

– “Nella città IN CUI abito ci sono molti cinema (There are a lot of cinemas in the town IN WHICH I live)

– “L’amico A CUI scrivo si chiama Luca” (The friend TO WHOM I’m writing is called Luca)

– “La casa IN CUI abito è carina” (The house IN WHICH I live is cozy)
