Il nuovo Colosseo

The new Colosseum

(a wooden floor)

To describe what an object is MADE OF, rather than an adjective (English “metallic”, “wooden”), Italian often uses a prepositional phrase, the preposition “di” or “in” with a noun (such as legno, cotone…):

  • DI/IN cotone = cotton
  • DI/IN seta = silk
  • DI/IN ferro = iron
  • DI/IN legno = wood

– “Questa porta è DI LEGNO”
= This door is MADE OF WOOD

– “Ho comprato una sciarpa DI LANA”
= I bought a WOOL scarf

Translation

The Italian Minister of Culture, Dario Franceschini, has presented the project to renovate the Colosseum, the iconic monument of Rome.

The ambitious intervention, which is expected to be completed by 2023, includes the construction of a technologically advanced and eco-sustainable wooden floor, creating a sort of arena at the center of the Colosseum.

Visitors will be able to walk on the platform and stand at the center of the Colosseum, “seeing the Colosseum as all travelers saw it until the end of the 19th century”, as stated by the Minister.

The goal of the project is to restore the ancient scenic structure of the Colosseum, as even in ancient Rome the underground areas were covered by a wooden platform.

These underground areas were used to prepare the shows that took place on the surface, in the arena, and for this reason, there were complicated mechanisms to transport people, gladiators, scenery, and animals.

In short, it will be like traveling back in time and seeing the gigantic Colosseum through the eyes of a gladiator or a confused African lion.
