Grammar

Si riflessivo vs Si impersonale
Reflexive “si” vs impersonal “si”

“…ha detto che non si terrà al Colosseo. Come possibili location, si parla dell’Arena di Verona o di Pompei”
(…said that it won’t take place at the Colosseum. As possible locations, there is talk of the Arena of Verona or Pompeii)

In both sentences, the verb “si terrà” and “si parla” are constructed with the pronoun “si”, but they have different meanings and functions.

  • “si terrà”: In this case, “si” is used as a 3rd person reflexive pronoun of the verb “tenersi” (to take place). The verb “si terrà” is the future tense of the verb “tenersi”, and it translates to “will take place, will happen”.

Reflexive verbs indicate that the subject of the verb is also the receiver of the action. In other words, the subject is performing the action on itself.
Reflexive verbs are accompanied by reflexive pronouns like “mi,” “ti,” “si,” “ci,” and “vi,”:

  • Mi lavo le mani (I wash my hands)
  • Ti pettini i capelli (You comb your hair)
  • Si svegliano presto (They wake up early)

  • “si parla”: Here, “si” is used to indicate an impersonal statement or a general observation. “Parla” is the 3rd person singular form of the present tense of “parlare,” which means “to talk” or “to speak.” In this context, “si parla” is translated as “it is said”.

Impersonal verbs are used to express actions or situations without explicitly specifying the subject performing the action. They are often used in situations where the subject is vague, unknown, or general.
Impersonal verbs are conjugated in the 3rd person singular form:

  • Si dice che pioverà domani (It is said that it will rain tomorrow)
  • Si vive bene in questa città (One lives well in this city)
  • Si può mangiare qui (One can eat here)
