Grammar

Verbi Riflessivi
Reflexive Verbs

“si è svolta la 93esima edizione degli Oscar”
(the 93rd Academy Awards took place)

The reflexive verbs are used when the SUBJECT of a verb is also its RECIPIENT, to express actions that “reflect” their effect on the speaker. They are very common in Italian.
Their infinitive form has the reflexive pronoun -SI (=self) joined onto it:

– lavare → lavarSI (= to wash → to wash ONESELF)
– chiamare → chiamarSI (= to call → to call YOURSELF)

– “Luca SI ALZA presto”
= Luca wakes up early

– “Devo prepararMI per la festa”
= I have to prepare (myself) for the party

In the COMPOUND tenses, reflexive verbs are always conjugated with the auxiliary verb ESSERE.
The past participle has to agree with the subject:

– “Paolo (m.) SI È ALZATO presto”
= Paolo woke up early

– “Paola (f.) SI È ALZATA tardi”
= Paola woke up late

The conjugation of a reflexive verb is the same as an ordinary verb, except for the addition of the appropriate REFLEXIVE PRONOUN in front of the verb:

  • io MI lavo = I wash MYSELF
  • tu TI lavi = you wash YOURSELF
  • lui-lei SI lava = he-she-it washes HIM-HERSELF
  • noi CI laviamo = we wash OURSELVES
  • voi VI lavate = you wash YOURSELVES
  • loro SI lavano = they wash THEMSELVES

Translation

On the night between Sunday and Monday, April 26, the 93rd edition of the Oscars took place, with a delay of two months due to the pandemic.
Most of the award winners physically attended the ceremony in Los Angeles.

“Nomadland,” the favorite of the eve, won the award for Best Picture, Best Director (for Chinese director Chloé Zhao), and Best Actress in a Leading Role (for Frances McDormand, her third Oscar).

Anthony Hopkins won Best Actor for his role in “The Father.”

The awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress went to British actor Daniel Kaluuya (for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah”) and South Korean actress Yuh-Jung Youn (for her role in “Minari”), respectively.

“Nomadland,” a “small” film by Hollywood standards, is based on a 2017 book by journalist Jessica Bruder. Many non-professional actors and actresses appear in the film.

The protagonist, Fern (played masterfully by Frances McDormand), is a middle-aged woman who, after becoming a widow and unemployed, sets out to travel across the United States in her van, in search of odd jobs and a new life.

Chinese director Chloé Zhao is only the second woman in history to win an Oscar for Best Director, following Kathryn Bigelow in 2010 for the film “The Hurt Locker.”
