Grammar

La forma passiva
Passive form

“Un volo della Lufthansa…è stato mandato a Malta”
(A Lufthansa flight…was redirected to Malta)

The passive voice is a grammatical construction in which the subject of the sentence undergoes the action rather than performing it. In other words, the focus is on what is being done to the subject, rather than who is doing it.
When explicited, the doer of the action is introduced by the preposition “da” (by).

The choice between active and passive voice depends on the emphasis and the information you want to convey in the sentence.
Let’s see some examples:

Active Voice > Passive Voice

  • Il pilota guida l’aereo. (The pilot is flying the plane.)
    > L’aereo è guidato dal pilota. (The plane is flown by the pilot.)

  • La cuoca sta cucinando la cena. (The cook is preparing dinner.)
    > La cena è cucinata dalla cuoca. (Dinner is prepared by the cook.)

  • L’insegnante spiega la lezione agli studenti. (The teacher is explaining the lesson to the students.)
    > La lezione è spiegata agli studenti dall’insegnante. (The lesson is explained to the students by the teacher.)

  • Mia madre sta annaffiando i fiori. (My mother is watering the flowers.)
    > I fiori nel giardino sono annaffiati da mia madre. (The flowers in the garden are watered by my mother.)

Translation

On July 16th, a fire severely damaged the Fontanarossa airport in Catania, and it particularly destroyed terminal A.

Due to the fire, many flights to Catania are forced to land at other nearby airports.

A Lufthansa flight, departing from Frankfurt, was redirected to Malta. When the pilot discovered that he couldn’t land in Catania, he reacted very poorly.

So, he decided to express his annoyance in an original way: with his aircraft, he drew the shape of a “penis” in the sky.
