Carlos Alcaraz ha vinto Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz won Wimbledon

Grammar

Nonostante + congiuntivo = frase concessiva
Nonostante + subjunctive = concessive clause

“Nonostante sia il numero uno della classifica mondiale ATP”
(Despite being ranked number one in the ATP world ranking)

The conjunction “nonostante” introduces a concessive clause, indicating that there is a contrast or concession between the two parts of the sentence.

In Italian, concessive clauses introduced by some conjunctions of “contrast“, must be followed by subjunctive mood:

  • nonostante + subjunctive
  • sebbene + subjunctive
  • benché + subjunctive
  • malgrado + subjunctive

For example:

  • Sebbene piova, uscirò per una passeggiata. (Although it’s raining, I will go out for a walk.)
  • “Benché piovesse, siamo usciti lo stesso. (Even though it was raining, we went out.)
  • Esco nonostante sia stanco. (I go out even though I’m tired.)
  • Vorrei mangiare malgrado non abbia fame. (I’d like to eat even though I’m not hungry.)

Attention: all these conjunctions can introduce a verb, but only “nonostante-malgrado” can be used with nouns:

→ NONOSTANTE – MALGRADO + NOUN or VERB
→ BENCHÉ – SEBBENE + VERB

  • Nonostante/Malgrado la pioggia (n.), sono uscito. (Despite the rain, I went out)

But:

  • Sebbene/Benché piovesse (v.), sono uscito. (Despite it was raining, I went out)

Translation

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbian Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final after a battle lasting almost five hours.

For Alcaraz, it is his first victory at Wimbledon and his second Grand Slam title, following the 2022 US Open.

Alcaraz is just 20 years old and is the third youngest player to win Wimbledon.

Despite being ranked number one in the ATP world rankings, Alcaraz was not the favorite in this final.

Djokovic, who is 36 years old, is the most successful player in the history of tennis with 23 career Grand Slam titles, and in 2023 he has already won two Slams, the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

For many, Alcaraz’s victory represents a symbolic win: the end of the era of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, and the beginning of a new era.
