Carlos Alcaraz ha vinto Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz won Wimbledon

Grammar

Pur + gerundio = frase concessiva
Pur + gerund = concessive clause

(Despite being ranked number one in the ATP rankings)

In Italian, the construction with “pur” followed by the gerund is used to introduce a concessive clause (despite, although….), indicating that there is a contrast or concession between the two parts of the sentence.

Here are some examples:

(Despite having studied a lot, he got a low grade.)
  • Pur essendo stanco, ha continuato a lavorare. (Despite being tired, he continued to work.)
(Despite it raining, we went out for a walk.)
(Despite being late, he preferred to wait for his friend.)
(Despite being a beginner, he showed great talent.)

Translation

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbian Novak Djokovic in the final of the Wimbledon tournament, after a battle that lasted five sets and nearly five hours.

This is Alcaraz’s first victory at Wimbledon and his second Grand Slam title, following the US Open in 2022.

Alcaraz just turned 20 years old and is the third youngest player to win Wimbledon, after German Boris Becker and Swedish Björn Borg.

Despite being ranked number one in the ATP rankings (the international men’s tennis federation), Alcaraz was considered the underdog in the final.

Djokovic, in fact, is not only the most successful player in the history of tennis (with 23 career Grand Slam titles), but he also came into this 2023 season after winning both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

For many, the victory of the young Spanish phenomenon represents a turning point: the end of the twenty-year dominance of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic in tennis, and the beginning of a new era.
