140 dollari per UNA tazza di caffè ☕️

$140 for a cup of coffee

Grammar

Valere la pena = “to be worth it”

“Ma ne vale la pena?”
(But is it worth it?)

The construction “valere la pena” in Italian is used to express the idea that something is worth the time, effort, or resources invested in it. In this construction, the verb “valere” (to be worth) is followed by “la pena” (the trouble, the effort).

1. Valere la pena + di + inf. verb:
“
Valere la pena” is commonly followed by the preposition “di” and the infinitive verb:

  • Vale la pena di studiare italiano (It’s worth studying Italian)
  • È valsa la pena di impegnarsi così tanto, visti i risultati ottenuti (It was worth the effort, given the results obtained)

2.  Ne + valere la pena
The pronoun “ne” often replaces the preposition “di” and the following infinitive verb to refer back to a previously mentioned action, experience, or object:

  • “Sto pensando di visitare l’India quest’estate” – “Ne vale la pena, è un posto magico!” (“I’m thinking of visiting India this summer” – “It’s worth it, it’s a magical place!”)

In the sentence, ”ne” replaces the sentence “di visitare l’India” (to visit India).

Translation

Some time ago we talked about the cheapest coffee in Italy (and maybe in the world).

Today, instead, we talk about what is perhaps the most expensive coffee in the world: it can be found in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺, and it costs the astronomical figure of 140 US dollars per cup.

How is this possible? This coffee is called “Black Jaguar”, and it is cultivated in the Chiriqui region, Panama 🇵🇦. It is considered one of the best in the world.

Nolan Hirte, the owner of “Proud Mary” coffee in Melbourne, bought the only 450 grams available of this coffee for 2,000 dollars. From these 450 grams, Nolan made 22 cups of coffee, which explains the incredible price of each cup.

But is it worth it? According to Nolan, yes: “It was a special cup of coffee, something that makes you say wow!”.

Would you pay so much for a cup of coffee?
