Grammar

Pronome diretto LO
Direct object pronoun LO

“…sulle possibili piccole e grandi misure per contrastarlo”
(…the possible small and large measures to counter it)

In the Italian phrase “contrastarlo,” the pronome diretto “lo” is used to replace a direct object noun to avoid repetition and make the sentence more concise.
In this context, “lo” refers to “riscaldamento globale.”

In Italian, direct object pronouns (pronomi diretti) are used to replace direct object nouns in a sentence. They agree in gender and number with the noun they replace. For masculine singular nouns, the direct object pronoun “lo” is used.

Here are some examples:

  • Non ho ancora letto il libro, ma lo leggerò presto (I haven’t read the book yet, but I will read it soon)
  • Mi piace questo spettacolo, lo guardo ogni settimana (I like this show, I watch it every week.)
  • Non conosco lo zio di Maria, ma lo incontrerò alla festa (I don’t know Maria’s uncle, but I will meet him at the party.)

In Italian, the placement of the direct object pronoun depends on the verb tense, mood, and form.
When the verb is in the infinitive, gerund, or imperative mood, the direct object pronoun is attached to the end of the verb, forming a single word:

  1. Infinitive: Mangiarlo (To eat it)
  2. Gerund: Mangiandolo (Eating it)
  3. Imperative: Mangialo! (Eat it!)

In the case of “contrastarlo,” since “contrastare” is in the infinitive form, the direct object pronoun “lo” is attached to the end of the verb, forming a single word.
