Grammar

Pronimi Relativi: “il quale”
Relative Pronouns: “il quale”

“Leonardo Del Vecchio…il quale si trova al 62esimo posto”
(Leonardo Del Vecchio… who is in 62nd place)

Relative pronouns substitute a noun and create a RELATION between two sentences.

The Italian relative pronouns “che”, “cui”, “il quale, la quale, i quali, le quali” correspond to the English ‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’, ‘whom’, ‘whose’.

IL QUALE is more formal and may replace “che” and “cui”.

It has feminine and plural forms:

masculine singular → IL QUALE
feminine singular → LA QUALE
masculine plural → I QUALI
feminine plural → LE QUALI

They are used to create emphasis or to be more specific:

– “L’amico AL QUALE (= a cui) scrivo si chiama Luca”
= the friend TO WHOM  I’m writing is called Luca

In this example, the use of IL QUALE instead of CHE helps to avoid confusion between two nouns:

– “Conosco l’amico di Laura, CHE fa il medico”
= I know the friend of Laura, WHO is a doctor

→ Conosco l’amico di Laura, IL QUALE (= l’amico) fa il medico

Or:

→ Conosco l’amico di Laura, LA QUALE (= Laura) fa il medico
