Today is Earth Day 2024

Grammar

Passivo con “venire”
Passive form using “venire”

“anche se vengono usati…”
(even if used…)

In Italian, the verb “venire” can be used instead of “essere” to form the passive voice, as in this case.
The passive form is constructed by conjugating the verb “venire” in the appropriate tense and person, followed by the past participle of the main verb.
Note that “venire” cannot replace “essere” to form the passive voice in composite tenses, such as perfect or past perfect forms. Here are a few examples:

– Il libro viene letto da Maria (The book is read by Maria)
– Le case venivano costruite in pietra (The houses were built in stone)
– La pizza verrà mangiata stasera (The pizza will be eaten tonight)

Translation

Today, all around the world, it’s Earth Day, an initiative born in 1970 in the United States.

This year’s theme is “The Planet vs. Plastic,” with the goal of reducing plastic production by 60% by 2040.

Another objective is to eliminate single-use plastic by 2030. Many single-use items, even if used for a very short time, remain in the environment for many years.

Lastly, the final objective is to limit fast fashion, which causes significant environmental problems. Over 100 billion garments are produced every year, but 85% of them are discarded shortly after use.
