Grammar

Gerundio modale
Gerund to express “how”

“Leggendo il messaggio”
(Reading the message)

In this sentence, leggendo is the gerund of the verb “leggere” (to read).
One of the many uses of gerund, in Italian, is to express the way or manner in which an action is performed, similar to “by doing” in English. For example:

– Ho risolto il problema leggendo il manuale (I solved the problem by reading the manual)
– La ragazza ha imparato l’italiano parlando con gli italiani (The girl learned Italian by speaking with Italians)

With the help of the Spanish media, Dario managed to track down the child, and the two will meet soon in Mallorca.
