Oggi è la Festa del Papà

Today is Father’s Day

In Italia il 19 marzo è la festa del papà.

La Festa del Papà è il 19 marzo perché in questo giorno è morto San Giuseppe.

Per i cattolici, San Giuseppe è il marito di Maria e il padre “adottivo” di Gesù.

In questa giornata, in Italia mangiamo dei dolci tradizionali, per esempio le zeppole napoletane e i bignè di San Giuseppe.

Grammar

Articoli partitivi = “dei”
Partitive articles: “some”

“dei dolci tradizionali”
(some traditional sweets)

In Italian, the partitive article indicates some part, an unspecified number of a group of things/people.
It’s formed by the preposition “di” + the definite article, which agrees in number and gender with the word that follows, in this case: di + i = dei.
It can be used with both countable and uncountable nouns; with countable nouns, only plural forms dei, delle, degli:

– Vorrei dello zucchero, grazie (I would like some sugar, please)
– Ci sono degli studenti italiani in classe (There are some Italian students in class)
– Oggi ho del tempo libero (Today I have some free time)

Translation

In Italy, March 19th is Father’s Day.

Father’s Day is on March 19th because Saint Joseph died on this day.

For Catholics, Saint Joseph is the husband of Mary and the “adoptive” father of Jesus.

On this day, in Italy, we eat traditional sweets, for example, Neapolitan zeppole and Saint Joseph’s cream puffs.
