Grammar

“Si” impersonale
Impersonal “si”

“…la bellezza del paesaggio che si può ammirare mentre si mangia”
(…the beauty of the landscapes that one can admire while eating)

In this sentence, “si possono ammirare” and “si mangia” are impersonal verbs.

The construction “si + verb” is used in Italian to express an action or event that is carried out by an unspecified subject, in a general or indefinite way. This is known as the impersonal form.

In this sentence, “si possono ammirare” means “one can admire” or “you can admire”, without specifying who is doing the admiring. Similarly, “si mangia” means “one eats” or “you eat”, without specifying who is doing the eating.

The impersonal “si” is formed by conjugating the verb in the third person singular and adding “si” before it. For example, “si mangia” means “one eats” or “people eat”.

These constructions are often used to express general or universal truths, instructions, or recommendations, and are commonly found in recipes, signs, and instructions.

Here are some examples:

  • In questo ristorante si mangia bene (One eats well in this restaurant)
  • Si può fumare qui? (Is smoking allowed here?)
  • Si vive una volta sola (You only live once.)
  • In molti paesi asiatici si mangia con le bacchette (In many Asian countries, people eat with chopsticks)
