Infinito passato
Past infinitive

“per aver recitato..”
(for having acted…)

The infinito has a past tense, indicating an ACTION PRECEDING the one in the primary sentence.
The infinito passato is made from the auxiliary ESSERE or AVERE (depending on the verb) + PAST PARTICIPLE.
dormire > AVERE DORMITO = having slept
stare > ESSERE STATO = having been

This structure is often used with temporal conjunction PRIMA / DOPO / APPENA…:
– Dopo AVER MANGIATO, ho fatto un pisolino (After eating/having eaten, I took a nap)
– Prima di AVER PARLATO con Luca, non sapevo cosa fare (Before speaking to Luca, I didn’t know what to do)

Note that often the infinito passato is rendered in English with the GERUND:
– AVER RICEVUTO questa notizia mi ha reso felice (HAVING HEARD/HEARING this news made me happy)
