Grammar

Superlativo Relativo
Relative Superlative

“Un viaggio lunghissimo attraverso tutta l’Italia”
(A very long journey through all of Italy)

How to say in Italian that someone or something is “the most…” or “the least…”?
To do this, we use the Superlativo relativo, which indicates that the quality of someone-something is at the highest degree of MAJORITY or MINORITY with respect to other things or people.
It refers to something-somebody having “the most” or “the least” of a certain quality.

It’s formed with the definite ARTICLE and PIÙ/MENO:

Majority → IL PIÙ + ADJ + di – fra – tra – in
Minority: → IL MENO + ADJ + di – fra – tra – in

– “Il Po è IL PIÙ LUNGO fiume italiano”
= The Po is THE LONGEST Italian river

– “Roma è la PIÙ BELLA città del mondo”
= Rome is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL city in the world

PIÙ/MENO may FOLLOW the noun, in which case the article is not repeated:

– “Il Po è IL fiume PIÙ LUNGO d’Italia”
= The Po is THE LONGEST Italian river

– “Roma è LA città PIÙ BELLA del mondo”
= Rome is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL city in the world

Translation

7,200 km across 20 regions. A very long journey through all of Italy, from North to South, including the islands: We’re talking about the “Sentiero Italia,” born in 1984.

After many years of abandonment, this trekking through the Peninsula has finally been brought back to life, thanks to the work of many volunteers from the CAI (Italian Alpine Club). The volunteers worked even during the pandemic.

According to international newspapers, the Sentiero is “the longest trekking trail in the world.” And perhaps the most beautiful, thanks to the variety of landscapes in our magnificent Peninsula.

Starting from Santa Teresa di Gallura, in Sardinia, and ending in Muggia, in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
