Roma, arriva il distributore di pizza in 3 minuti

Rome - vending machine makes pizza in 3 minutes

Grammar

Metterci VS Volerci: “it takes…”

“ci mette solo 3 minuti”
(i
t only takes 3 minutes)

“Volerci” and “metterci” both express a TIME PERIOD, but they must be used in a different way.

1. “volerci” → time required for PARTICULAR DEED:

The subject here is the TIME spent doing the deed. For this reason, the verb “volerci” can be only conjugated with the 3rd person singular or plural (to indicate a singular or plural time, as an hour or two hours…):

→ CI VUOLE + SINGULAR
→ CI VOGLIONO + PLURAL

“CI VUOLE un’ora per fare la pizza”
= IT TAKES an hour to make a pizza

“CI VOGLIONO due ore per fare la lasagna”
= IT TAKES two hours to make lasagna

2. “metterci” → the time required by a person/thing for a SPECIFIC DEED:

The subject here is the PERSON that commits the deed. Therefore the verb follows the subject and can be conjugated with any person:

→ io CI METTO, tu CI METTI, lui CI METTE…

“CI METTO (io) un’ora a venire”
= IT TAKES me an hour to come

“CI METTO (io) due ore a venire”
= IT TAKES me two hours to come

“Quanto CI METTI (tu) a venire?”
= How long does IT TAKES you to come?

Translation

In Rome, the first automatic pizza vending machine has opened, open every day, 24 hours a day. It only takes 3 minutes to make a pizza.

You can choose from four types of pizza: margherita, spicy salami, bacon, and four cheeses. The price ranges from €4.50 for margherita to €6 for four cheeses.

The idea of the “Mr.Go” company has provoked different reactions, lots of curiosity and some doubts.

For many people, the “express” pizza is not a good idea because it doesn’t respect tradition.

According to others, especially younger people, it’s a very convenient service because it’s always open at all hours.

The first brave customers, however, seem quite satisfied: “The mozzarella and tomato are excellent, it’s good for me,” says one of the first customers. “The ingredients are not bad, but the pizza is a bit dry,” says another customer.

In short, we will only know in a few months whether the “Mr.Go” idea will be a success or not.

One thing is for sure: it won’t be easy, as the most famous street food in Rome is “pizza al taglio,” delicious, fast, and cheap.

What do you think? Would you like to try the “express” pizza or the “pizza al taglio”?
