Grammar

Verbi + preposizioni
Verbs + prepositions

“…si ferma ad ascoltare”
(…stops to listen)

In Italian prepositions often introduce a dependent clause in the infinitive such as:

  • Cerca DI capire (Try to understand)
  • Vieni A vedere (Come to see)
  • Ho molto DA fare (I’ve got a lot to do)
  • Inizia A piovere (It starts to rain)

In this function the role of the preposition is similar to that of a conjunction.

“Di/a/da/per” are the most commonly used in this function. It is impossible to give precise rules on the use of these prepositions, which mainly depend on the verb they accompany.
