Grammar

Pronome diretto MI
Direct object pronoun MI

“Questo mondo non mi renderà cattivo”
(This world won’t make me bad)

In Italian, a direct object pronoun replaces a noun used as a direct object, it must therefore agree in gender and number with the noun it refers to.
For the 1st person singular we use the pronoun “MI”.

In the sentence above, the pronoun “mi” replaces the direct object “me”:

non renderà cattivo ME > non MI renderà cattivo

As we can see from the example above, it normally comes before the verb:

  • Mi ami? (Do you love me?)
  • Mi chiami spesso. (You call me often.)
  • Mi hai visto ieri al supermercato? (Did you see me yesterday at the supermarket?)
  • Mi hai deluso. (You disappointed.)
  • Mi sento stanco oggi. (I feel tired today.)

However, if there are two verbs, or the verb is in the gerund, imperative or infinitive form, the pronoun follows the verb:

  • Vieni a prendermi! (Come pick me up!)
  • Chiamami! (Call mi!)
  • Guardandomi, non mi sono riconosciuto. (Looking at myself, I didn’t recognize myself.)
