Grammar

Aggettivi in “-bile”
Adjectives ending in -bile

The adjective “indimenticabile” is one of the many Italian adjectives ending with the suffix “-bile”.

This suffix is used to form adjectives from verbs. In particular, it is used to form adjectives that express the capacity or inclination to perform the action indicated by the verb.

In the case of “indimenticabile”, it is formed from the verb “dimenticare”, which means “to forget”, and the suffix “-bile” is added to form an adjective that means “forgettable”. The negative suffix “in-” at the beginning, then, negates the meaning of the original adjective, resulting in “indimenticabile”, which means “unforgettable“.

Similarly, other adjectives formed with this suffix include “amabile” (lovable, amiable), “credibile” (credible), “impossibile” (impossible), ecc.
