La Finlandia è il paese più felice al mondo

Finland ranked happiest country in the world

Grammar

Sebbene + congiuntivo: frase concessiva
Sebbene + subjunctive: Concessive clause

“sebbene sia stato un anno molto duro, i dati mostrano significativi segni di resilienza”
(although it has been a very tough year, the data shows significant signs of resilience)

In Italian, some conjunctions of “contrast“, introducing a concessive clause, must be followed by subjunctive mood:

benché + subjunctive
sebbene + subjunctive
nonostante + subjunctive
malgrado + subjunctive

For example:

– “BENCHÉ PIOVESSE, siamo usciti lo stesso”
= Even though it WAS RAINING, we went out

– “Esco NONOSTANTE SIA stanco”
= I go out EVEN THOUGH I’m tired

– “Vorrei mangiare MALGRADO non ABBIA fame”
= I’d like to eat EVEN THOUGH I’m not hungry

Attention: all these conjunctions can introduce a verb, but only “nonostante-malgrado” can be used with nouns:

→ NONOSTANTE / MALGRADO + NOUN or VERB
→ BENCHÉ / SEBBENE + VERB

– “Nonostante-Malgrado LA PIOGGIA (n.), sono uscito”
= Despite THE RAIN, I went out

But:

– “Sebbene-Benché PIOVESSE (v.), sono uscito”
= Despite it WAS RAINING, I went out

Translation

Finland remains at the top of the ranking of the happiest countries in the world for the fourth consecutive time, according to this year’s World Happiness Report.

Italy, on the other hand, moves from 28th to 25th place, despite the horribilis year just passed.

This year’s report found itself analyzing an unprecedented situation, particularly evaluating the effects of the pandemic on people’s subjective well-being.

Among the categories taken into consideration, one of the main ones was people’s trust in their own community.
However, to the surprise of many analysts, there was no evident decline in the general well-being of people’s lives.

According to university professor Lara Aknin, “Although it has been a very tough year, the data shows significant signs of resilience, such as the willingness to social connection“.

Jeffrey D. Sachs, president of the organization that has been publishing the report for nine years, argues that we urgently need to “learn the lesson that Covid has taught us: the pandemic reminds us of all the environmental threats that afflict us, and therefore the urgent need to collaborate”.
