Grammar

Verbo servile: potere
Modal verb “potere” (to be able to, can)

“le persone possono usare la crema solare senza pagare”
(people can use sunscreen without paying)

In this sentence, the verb “possono” is the present indicative form of the modal verb “potere” (to be able to, can).
Remember that “potere”, like the other modal verbs in Italian (dovere, volere) are followed by an infinitive verb.

Here is the conjugation of “potere” in the present tense:

  • Io posso (I can)
  • Tu puoi (You can)
  • Lui/Lei può (He/She can)
  • Noi possiamo (We can)
  • Voi potete (You can)
  • Loro possono (They can)

Now, let’s look at some examples using “potere” in different contexts:

  • Expressing ability:
    • Posso parlare italiano molto bene. (I can speak Italian very well.)
    • Puoi nuotare molto velocemente. (You can swim very fast.)
  • Expressing permission:
    • Possiamo uscire stasera? (Can we go out tonight?)
    • Potete entrare nel parco liberamente. (You can enter the park freely.)
  • Expressing possibility:
    • Può essere che venga domani. (He/She may come tomorrow.)
    • Possiamo vincere la partita. (We can win the game.)
  • Expressing polite requests:
    • Puoi/Potresti aiutarmi con queste valigie? (Could you help me with these suitcases?)
    • Puoi/Potresti prestarmi la vostra penna? (Could you lend me your pen?)

Translation

In the Netherlands, this summer sunscreen is free of charge.

At the beach and in many public places such as parks, schools, and sports fields, there are sunscreen dispensers.

Thanks to these dispensers, people can use sunscreen without paying.

With this initiative, the government aims to combat skin tumors. Unfortunately, in recent years, this type of cancer has increased significantly.

It is a beautiful and useful initiative: many people do not buy or use sunscreen because it is too expensive.
