In Brasile c’è un’altra Fontana di Trevi

In Brazil there is another Trevi Fountain

Grammar

Metterci = to take time

“Per fare la fontana ci hanno messo poco più di un anno”
(It took them just over a year to build the fountain)

The verb “metterci” is an idiomatic expression that means “to take time” or “to require time”.

It is used with the preposition “ci” to indicate the amount of time something takes.

For example:

  • “Ci metto 30 minuti ad arrivare a casa” (It takes me 30 minutes to get home)
  • Quanto ci avete messo per andare a Londra? (How long did it take you to go to London?)
  • Quanti giorni ci metterai a finire questo progetto? (How many days will it take you to finish this project?)

Translation

As everyone knows, if you want to throw a coin into the famous Trevi Fountain, you have to go to… Serra Negra, a city located 150km from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

No mistake. It’s all true: they have built a replica of the Trevi Fountain from Rome in Serra Negra.

It took them just over a year to build the fountain, and they spent about 300,000 euros. It is 11 meters tall and 21 meters wide.

This project has received many criticisms. However, the officials defend their idea, saying that the fountain will help local tourism. Furthermore, it is also a tribute to Italy because many residents of the city have a connection to Italy.

In the early 20th century, millions of Italians left Italy and arrived in South America in search of a better life.
