Google compie 25 anni 🎈

Google turns 25

Imperfetto
Imperfect mood

“All’epoca esistevano già altri motori di ricerca, ma nessuno riusciva a fornire agli utenti risultati utili”
(At that time, there were already other search engines, but none could provide users with useful results)

The imperfect tense is one of the most frequently used past tenses in Italian. It’s used for:

1. situations in the past, when it is not necessary to specify how long an action lasted:
– Ieri ERO molto stanco (Yesterday I was very tired)

2. habits in the past:
– Da piccolo ANDAVO spesso in bici (When I was a child I USED TO cycle often)

3. physical and psychological states in the past:
– ERAVAMO tutti felici (We WERE all happy)

4. actions taking place at the same moment in the past:
– È successo mentre DORMIVAMO (It happened while we WERE asleep)

To make the imperfect tense of regular -are, -ere and -ire verbs, knock off the -RE from the infinitive to form the stem of the verbs and add:
-VO, -VI, -VA, -VAMO, -VATE, -VANO

parlare → PARLAVO, PARLAVA…
credere → CREDEVO, CREDEVA…
finire → FINIVO, FINIVA…

Google, the company that revolutionized online searches, is celebrating its 25th anniversary today.

It was on September 4, 1998, when Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two students at Stanford University, founded Google in a garage in Menlo Park.

At that time, there were already other search engines, but none could provide users with useful results. Page and Brin’s brilliant idea was to create an algorithm that could organize websites based on their relevance.

The idea immediately met with incredible success, making Google the most widely used search engine in the world in no time.

25 years later, Google (now Alphabet) is one of the global giants in the tech industry and one of the most famous words in the world. In Italy as well, the new word “googlare” (to google) has become part of everyday vocabulary.
