Former professor gives $1 billion to her school

Grammar

Chiedere che + congiuntivo

“ha chiesto che i soldi vengano usati”
(has requested that the money be used)

The phrase “chiedere che” in Italian can be followed by the subjunctive mood when it introduces a subordinate clause expressing a desire, an order or a request, whose result is uncertain.
This is because the subjunctive mood is mostly used to convey uncertainty and subjectivity.
For example:

– Chiedo solo che tu sia rispettoso (I only request that you are respectful)
– Chiediamo che venga fatta giustizia (We ask that justice be done)

Gottesman has requested that the money be used to cover tuition fees for all students who enroll in the school from August 2024 onwards.

With this donation, Gottesman hopes that people who could not afford to attend the school will now be able to enroll.

In the rather moving announcement video, students react by bursting with joy, crying, and embracing each other.
