Euro 2021: Italy beat Spain on penalties to reach final

(…the decisive error from the penalty spot, followed by the perfect penalty)

Relative pronouns substitute a noun and create a RELATION between two sentences.
The Italian relative pronouns “che”, “cui”, “il quale, la quale, i quali, le quali” correspond to the English ‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’, ‘whom’, ‘whose’.

CHE is the most used relative pronoun, but it cannot be used after a preposition. In these cases, we use CUI instead of CHE.
The preposition goes IN FRONT of the relative pronoun:

= There are a lot of cinemas in the town IN WHICH I live

– “L’amico A CUI scrivo si chiama Luca”
= The friend TO WHOM I’m writing is called Luca

– “La casa IN CUI abito è carina”
= The house IN WHICH I live is cozy

Translation

Italy is the first finalist of the 2021 European Championships: on the legendary field of the football temple, Wembley Stadium in London, the Azzurri defeated Spain 4-2 on penalties. In the final on Sunday, July 11th, also at Wembley, they will face the winner of the second semifinal, England-Denmark.

For Italy, it is their fourth final at the Euros, nine years after their last one, when they were humiliated 4-0 by Spain in a one-sided final. Their only triumph, instead, dates back 53 years ago, in 1968.

Unlike the previous matches, against Spain Italy had to endure the possession of the ball by the Spaniards and never had control of the game. However, it was precisely with a counter-attack started by goalkeeper Donnarumma in the 60th minute that Italy managed to take the lead with a shot from Federico Chiesa.

Ten minutes before the end of regular time, however, Spanish striker Alvaro Morata scored the well-deserved equalizer, sending the game to extra time, which ended without further goals.

It was Morata himself who made the decisive error from the penalty spot, followed by the perfect penalty of the Italo-Brazilian Jorginho, who gave Italy a hard-fought victory.
