Grammar

Ci + essere = there is/are

“ci sono più di 100 murales”
(there are over 100 murals)

The use of “ci sono” and “c’è” in Italian is similar to the English phrases “there are” and “there is”, respectively: they are both used to indicate the existence or presence of something.

“Ci sono” is the plural form, while “c’è” is the singular form.

In the above sentence “Ci sono più di 100 murales”, “ci sono” is used because “murales” (murals) is plural.

In contrast, if we were to say “C’è un murale”, we would use “c’è” because “un murale” (one mural) is singular.

Examples of “ci sono”:

  • Ci sono molti studenti in questa classe. (There are many students in this class)
  • Ci sono molte storie interessanti su questo luogo (There are many interesting stories about this place)

Examples of “c’è”:

  • C’è un libro sulla scrivania (There is a book on the desk)
  • C’è un problema con la macchina (There is a problem with the car)
