Grammar

Pronome relativo CUI
Relative pronoun CUI

“Una manifestazione artistica… a cui hanno partecipato finora più di 200 artisti”
(An artistic event… which has so far involved more than 200 artists)

In this sentence, “a cui” is used as a relative pronoun to refer back to the previously mentioned “manifestazione artistica” (artistic event).
This is because “partecipare” (to participate) requires the preposition “a” to indicate the thing or event being participated in.

CHE is the most used relative pronoun, but it cannot be used after a preposition. In these cases, we use CUI instead of CHE.
The preposition goes IN FRONT of the relative pronoun:

  • Il ragazzo con cui ho parlato è molto simpatico. (The boy I talked to is very nice.)
  • La città in cui vivo è molto bella. (The city I live in is very beautiful.)
  • La borsa di cui ho bisogno è quella nera. (The bag I need is the black one.)
