Man flies from London to Milan to get cheaper pizza

(compared to what he would have paid for a medium pizza from Domino’s)

In the sentence above, the past conditional “avrebbe pagato” is used to express a hypothetical scenario in the past.

In Italian, the past conditional can be used together with the past perfect subjunctive to express a hypothetical situation in the past that did not occur, but that could have occurred if certain conditions had been met: this construction is called “periodo ipotetico dell’impossibilità” (conditional period of impossibility).

So, if we were to rephrase the sentence using this construction, it could be written as: “…rispetto a quanto avrebbe pagato per una pizza media da Domino’s a Londra se l’avesse ordinata“ (…compared to what he would have paid for a medium pizza from Domino’s in London if he had ordered it).

Here are some more examples:

(If I had known you were coming, I would have waited for you at the station.)
(If I had had more time, I would have gone on vacation.)
(If you had studied more, you would have passed the exam.)

Translation

The 22-year-old English TikToker Callum Ryan has become famous online for his experiments and challenges.

In his latest experiment, he wanted to test if it was possible to eat an authentic Italian pizza spending less than what he would have paid for a medium pizza from Domino’s in London, which is £19.99, not including delivery fees.

Callum managed to buy a last-minute plane ticket from London Stansted to Milan for just £8. Once in Milan, he asked his followers for advice on the best local pizzeria.

Arriving at the restaurant, he received a complimentary appetizer and a glass of prosecco. He then ordered a simple margherita, paying the modest amount of €11.50.

Total spending: about £18, which is £2 less than what he would have spent ordering from Domino’s. And he ate a pizza that was undoubtedly much tastier and authentic. Crazy.

But there is a small caveat, as many commenters on Tiktok pointed out: Callum did not include the cost of the return flight in his expenses…
