Superlativo relativo
Relative superlative
“La Pianura Padana è la regione più inquinata dell’Europa occidentale”
(The Po Valley is the most polluted region in Western Europe)
In Italian, the superlative form is used to express the highest degree of a quality among a group. There are two forms of the superlative: the relative superlative (superlativo relativo) and the absolute superlative (superlativo assoluto).
The “superlativo relativo” is similar to the English “the most/the least…”. It is formed by using the definite article “il, la, lo, i, le, gli” + “più/meno” + adjective + preposition “di/tra/in” + the group you’re comparing.
For example, in the sentence above, ”la regione più inquinata dell’Europa occidentale” is the superlativo relativo. Here, “la più inquinata” means “the most polluted” and “dell’Europa occidentale” specifies the group being compared (in this case, “Western Europe”).
Here are a few more examples:

- “Questo è il libro meno interessante che ho letto.” (This is the least interesting book I’ve read)
- “Maria è la studentessa più diligente dell’università.” (Maria is the most diligent student at the university)
- “La torta al cioccolato è il dolce più amato dai bambini.” (Chocolate cake is the most loved dessert by children)
