Il 2022 è stato l’anno più caldo in Italia dal 1800

2022 hottest year in Italy since 1800

(is a phenomenon whose consequences have become increasingly evident)

In this sentence, “le cui” is a relative pronoun that means “whose” in English. It is used to introduce a relative clause that describes or specifies the noun that comes before it.

In Italian, the relative pronoun “cui” can be used in combination with the definite article to form four different forms: “il cui” (masculine singular), “la cui” (feminine singular), “i cui” (masculine plural), and “le cui” (feminine plural).

The definite article agrees in gender and number with the noun it is referring to, while “cui” is invariable. These forms are used to indicate possession or relationship between two things or people.

For example:

  • “Il cane, il cui padrone è mio amico, è molto affettuoso.” (The dog, whose owner is my friend, is very affectionate.)
  • “La casa, la cui finestra è aperta, sembra vuota.” (The house, whose window is open, seems empty.)
  • “I libri, i cui autori sono molto famosi, sono esauriti.” (The books, whose authors are very famous, are sold out.)
  • “Le ragazze, le cui borse sono state rubate, hanno sporto denuncia” (The girls, whose bags were stolen, filed a report)

Translation

The CNR (National Research Council) has published the data on temperatures recorded in Italy during 2022.

The data shows that 2022 was the hottest year since 1800, when data for comparison became available.

Compared to the thirty-year period between 1991 and 2020, the average temperature was higher by 1.15 °C.

In Northern Italy, the average temperature was 1.37 °C higher; in Central and Southern Italy, the increase was less pronounced, at 1.13 °C and 1 °C, respectively.

But we are not alone: 2022 was also the hottest year ever recorded in many other European countries: in France 🇫🇷, in the UK 🇬🇧, in Spain 🇪🇸, in Ireland 🇮🇪, in Switzerland 🇨🇭 and in Germany 🇩🇪.

Global warming caused by human activities is a phenomenon whose consequences have become increasingly evident in the last decade: for ten consecutive years, global average temperatures have been at least 1 °C higher than pre-industrial levels.
