Grammar

Congiuntivo con frasi concessive
Subjunctive mood with concessive clauses

“…nonostante le temperature glaciali arrivino fino ai -30°”
(…even though the icy temperatures can reach as low as -30°)

In this sentence, “nonostante” means “despite” or “even though” in English, and it is followed by the subjunctive mood.

In Italian, the subjunctive mood is often used in concessive clauses introduced by conjunctions such as “nonostante” (despite), “benché” (although), “sebbene” (although), “malgrado” (in spite of), etc.

Here are some examples:

  • Nonostante piova, usciamo stasera. (Even though it rains, we are going out tonight.)
  • Nonostante io abbia studiato molto, non ho passato l’esame. (Even though I studied a lot, I didn’t pass the exam.)
  • Nonostante tu abbia lavorato sodo, non sei riuscito a finire in tempo. (Even though you worked hard, you couldn’t finish on time.)

Translation

A couple of farmers from the village of Saint-Adolphe in Canada have created the world’s largest snow maze: a whopping 2,789 square meters in size, with dividing walls measuring 1.8 meters high.

The maze has officially entered the Guinness Book of World Records, surpassing the previous Canadian record.

Despite temperatures dropping as low as -30°C, the gigantic snow maze has become a popular tourist attraction.

Inside the maze, visitors can take advantage of five rest areas with fire pits to warm up. This is a necessary stop, considering it takes between 30 and 45 minutes to find the exit.
