60 anni fa il primo uomo nello spazio

First man in space 60 years ago

Grammar

Passato Remoto
Remote Past

“Gagarin morì in un incidente aereo”
(Gagarin died in a plane crash)

Il Passato remoto expresses an action completed in the past, that no longer has reference in the present: it’s used to express the distance of past events in terms of their “SEPARATENESS” (remoteness) from the present situation.

– “Leonardo da Vinci NACQUE nel 1452”
= Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452

– “VISSI male a Milano”
= I had a bad time living in Milan

In spoken Italian, it tends to be used seldom in the north of Italy, but quite often in central and southern Italy. It is very common in written language.

Translation

On April 12th, 60 years ago, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin boarded the Vostok 1 spacecraft (“east” in Russian), becoming the first human being to travel into space.

The mission was a huge success for the Soviet space program, which was more advanced than its American rival at the time. Indeed, space had become one of the many battlefields between the two superpowers of the Cold War.

Gagarin’s mission took off precisely at 9:07 am on April 12th, from the Russian base of Baikonur, and lasted a total of 108 minutes, from launch to Earth re-entry.

The small spherical capsule with Gagarin inside completed, for the first time in history, a full orbit around our planet before returning to Earth’s atmosphere.

Legend has it that two women, seeing Gagarin land safely, asked him in amazement if he had fallen from the sky, to which he reportedly replied, “Actually, I did!”.

Thanks to this success, the “cosmonaut” Gagarin became a legend, not only in his homeland but also around the world. Unfortunately, on March 27th, 1968, Gagarin died in a plane crash under mysterious circumstances, fueling various conspiracy theories about his disappearance.
