Perseverance è su Marte

Perseverance is on Mars

(…as Mars is very far from Earth, the news took 12 minutes to arrive)

In the sentence above, “essendo Marte lontanissimo dalla Terra” is a subordinate clause that provides additional information about Mars. It is introduced by the gerund “essendo” which means “being” or “since.”

The use of the gerundio in this case helps to express the cause of the main clause (the news taking 12 minutes to arrive) by indicating the reason or circumstance behind it.

Here are some more examples of the gerundio used in a similar way:

(Having finished work, I went for a walk.)
(Being sick, I didn’t go to work today.)
  • Vedendo che pioveva, ho preso l’ombrello. (I took an umbrella because I saw it was raining)
(Knowing that I would have a long day, I prepared dinner in advance.)
(He decided to rest for a bit because he was feeling weak)

Translation

After traveling 470 million kilometers and 203 days in space, Perseverance has finally landed on Mars.

The NASA rover touched down safely on Martian soil at 9:44 pm Italian time. However, since Mars is extremely far from Earth, the news took 12 minutes to arrive.

The most exciting moment undoubtedly came a few minutes later, when Perseverance sent its first photo taken on Martian soil: a photo destined to go down in the history of space exploration.

Thanks to the data it will send from the Red Planet, in the coming years Perseverance could help us answer the fateful question: did life exist on Mars?
